Archive News and Pics 2014 Season

Posted by John Beckett on 03/04/2015 10:50

Pre-Xmas winter nets commence at Mill Hill School on Tuesday 14 October and run for the following 10 weeks, 8-9pm.
Tavs rounded off the season in style with a tour to the lovely city of Valenciaover the weekend of 3-6 October. We even managed to somehow win games (usually unheard of on tour) on both the Saturday and Sunday despite not holding back on the pre and apres cricket front! Report opposite. We would like to thank Levante CC, and in particular Barry Eaton, for all their amazing efforts in making the tour such a resounding success.
Congratulations to Mark 'Doc' Blunden who made his way on to the honours board with a five-fer against Shakespeares on Sunday 7 Sept. Sadly it was in a losing cause as Shakeys ran out winners by 33 runs, but it didn't dampen Doc's celebrations afterwards and his wallet was somewhat lighter by the time we all departed the Shakespeares Head after the game. In the same match, Mark 'Swampy' Sewards sustained a nasty looking toe injury - see pic below. Can those not playing in the game guess how he did it? Answers to JB at the usual address.
The UK 'mini tour' to Cambridge over the weekend of 12/13 July was a great success and we hope to make it a regular feature on the fixture list. Thanks to Grantchester CC and Philanderers CC for all their help and hospitality over the two days. Pic below shows a few of the Tavs steaming into Grantchester…
Congratulations to Alan Browning for bagging his second Tavs five wicket haul in a surprisingly comfortable win against Beamers at North Mid CC on Sunday 6 July (see link opposite for report).
It's been a week of tumbling records for the Tavs. On Saturday 28 June, Joe Quinn (130 not out) and Chris Hill (109) shared in a record partnership of 228 against LMS at Southgate. It was also the first time two centuries had been scored in a Tavs innings and the final total was also a record - 311-3 in 35 overs. Unfortunately the game had to be abandoned as a draw early in the LMS reply due to deteriorating weather. With a win on Sunday over the Irregulars rounding the weekend off nicely, the record breaking carried on against the same oppo in Wednesday's T20. Tavs posted a record T20 score of 233 - 3 and this was followed by John Beckett's 6 for 27 off 3.4 overs, the best Tavs T20 bowling figures and second best in any format. Joe Quinn also passed 500 runs for the season in record time and is currently averaging 103 after 10 knocks. He also ended the three games 270 not out!
Matt Thomas became the 12th Tavs centurion on Sunday 22 June. Thommo celebrated his 100th game with a typically elegant and brisk 50 in a cracking game against Alleyn Adhocs XI, Tavs eventually winning by 27 runs in a match that ebbed and flowed throughout. Thommo is seen here receiving his award from vice-captain Jeremy Smith.
Dom Danos finally received his awards for 2013 after they went missing in a mystery reminiscent of the World Cup 1966 'Pickles' incident. The gongs were eventually found by Richard 'Redser' Horton after an intensive search of his mantlepiece. Dom is seen below receiving his awards - Best Batsman and Champagne Moment - from Tavs legend, Tony 'Skip' Burden. Dom had earlier hit a fluent 93 in a comfortable win over Palm Tree, passing 6000 Tavs career runs in the process. Quality.
A full weekend of cricket saw Tavs finish an excellent but ultimately disappointing joint 3rd in the UCS Sixes (see link opposite for report) on Saturday 31 May followed by a comprehensive win over Highgate Irregulars in a declaration game at Old Cholmleians Sports Ground on Sunday 1 June (report link opposite).
Tavs now have a full team of centurions following Scott Young's100th appearance on Sunday 25th May, making him the 11th Tav to reach this landmark. Scotty celebrated with a couple of stumpings in a comfortable win over Southgate Synagogue CC at Woodside Park (report link opposite). Pic shows Scott receiving his award, from a more suitably attired JB than last week, at the Prince Of Wales after the game.
Mark Sewards became the 10th member of the '100 Club' on Sunday 18th May, making his 100th appearance for the Tavs in the game against Archway Ladder. Unfortunately Tavs couldn't mark the occasion with a win, being soundly thrashed by 8 wickets (see report - link opposite). Still, it was sunny and the result didn't dampen the apres cricket at the PoW. Pic shows Mark receiving his award from JB, still decked out from Wembley the previous day…for which he was duly fined.
Tavs maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a battling win overShakepeares in a low scoring encounter at Hackney Marshes on Sunday 4th May. See link opposite for report.
Opening fixture was Sunday 27th April v Bohemians at North Middlesex CC. The T20 Test format proved popular and Tavs recorded a fine win - see report (link opposite) and team pic below.
