Archive News and Pics 2015 Season

Posted by John Beckett on 29/04/2017 08:50

A lively and very well attended AGM and Awards evening was held at the Prince of Wales on Thursday 26 November. Link below to minutes and full list of award winners.
There is no stopping Joe 'the mighty' Quinn. After setting a new Tavs individual record score of 172 not out earlier this season, Joe beat his own record with a magnificent 185 not out on Sunday 27 September in the final domestic game of the season against the Irregulars at Totteridge. Report opposite (click link) for full details.
Tavs are in the news! Click link for article in the Hampstead and Highgate Express ahead of our end of season tour to Rome, where we will be playing against the Vatican's very own cricket team, St Peter's CC.
22 Tavs gathered at Totteridge on Saturday 19 September for the annual battle for bragging rights between the Captain's XI and Vice Captain's XI (see report, link opposite). Captain Jem was victorious this year, his XI ending up comfortable winners by wickets with Pat Tripp the star of the show with an unbeaten 93. The good natured game was followed by a mammoth fines session, BBQ and the proceeds of the season's fines subsidised the bar for the evening. The day was rounded off back in Highgate village where the hard core partied into the wee hours. Many thanks to everyone at Totteridge Millhillians CC, who have been great landlords this season, for hosting us.
Congratulations to Sam Smith who scored a superb 100 in an outstanding 10 wicket victory over North London CC on Saturday 12 September (full report opposite, click link). Sam ended on 124 not out and was ably supported by Pat Tripp in an unbeaten partnership of 198.
Alan Browning became the latest member of the 100 wickets club on Sunday 16 August. Alo took 4 wickets against Abdul Aziz and reached the milestone with his second victim in that game. Alo, who is in the form of his life with bat and ball, then went on to hit this second ton of the season in the thrilling victory over Shakespeares on Sunday 6 September at Springfield Park. Congrats!
A couple of significant Tavs milestones were reached in the final T20 game of the season against Old Cholmeleians at North Mid CC on Tuesday 4th August. Barry Milligan became the Tavs top all time wicket taker, surpassing Jerome Pilley's long standing 162. Baz took two wickets to take his tally to 164. John Beckett then reached 100 Tavs career wickets following Bazza's spell, a 2-fer taking JB to 101. OC's went on to win a close encounter by 8 runs but it didn't dampen the celebrations, awards and raucous fines session afterwards at the Meghna curry house in Crouch End.
Tavs headed off to Cambridgeshire on the weekend of 11/12 July for the now annual UK mini tour to the lovely village of Grantchester. A great time was had by all despite resounding defeats to Grantchester CC on the Saturday and Philanderers CC on Sunday and we thank both teams for their hospitality. Full report to follow in due course but see below for one highlight, the collapsing of Swinders' tent early on Sunday morning. Ollie McGuinness is also in there somewhere…
Another first for the Tavs. The whole team were wearing the same style shirts for the first time ever for the game against Beamers at North Mid CC on Sunday 5 July. Pictorial proof below.
Not to be outdone by the Mighty Quinn, Alan Browning became one of an elite group of Tavs to appear on both honours bats with his maiden Tavs century in the T20 against Irregulars on Tuesday 30 June at North Mid CC. Alo hit 12 4s and 3 maximums in a classy knock of 102 off just 62 balls. Tavs went on to win the match by 35 runs and extend the current winning run to 6 games.
Congratulations to Joe Quinn who has smashed the Tavs individual high scorerecord, scoring 172 not out against Down Under Dragons at Totteridge on Sunday 28th June. It was a magnificent knock, completed with a huge, towering 6 off the final ball of the Tavs innings, out of the ground and over the neighbouring houses and trees. Joe hit 24 fours and 4 sixes and faced 135 balls. It was also Joe's second ton of the season so far, following his 105against Palm Tree 2 weeks previously. Tavs went on to win the game but not before a valiant chase of the 297 target by the Dragons. It wrapped up a good weekend following a 7 wicket win on Saturday over Princes Head at a sun drenched and busy Richmond Green.
It was Sixes time again with the always enjoyable UCS Old Boys tournament on Saturday 30th May. Tavs went one better than last year, losing a nail biting final on the penultimate ball. Pic of the magnificent 6 below (l-r, Jeremy Smith,  Joe Quinn, Adam Pervoe, Gopal Iyer, Jack Malnick, John Beckett) and report from the skipper opposite.
Tavs season kicked off in style at our new 'home' ground, Totteridge Millhillians CC (pic below) on Sunday 26 April. Bohemians were the oppo for the curtain raiser and Tavs recorded a comprehensive win, with Gopal Iyer bagging an excellent five-fer. See report opposite.

The inaugural Highgate Taverners Darts World Championship, aka, 'The Dart of War' was held at the Dukes Head in Highgate Village on Monday 29th December. With fancy dress, walk on music, and a 'top quality' field, the PDC event taking place up the road at Ally Pally was well and truly overshadowed by this momentous tournament. Congrats to Pete Thompson who lifted the Steve Beaton Cup after a tungsten marathon lasting seven hours. Well done also to JTfor securing victory in the Plate. Thanks are due to Pete Thompson, Pete Starkings and Mat Thomas for their superb organisation, the owners and staff of the Dukes Head for providing a terrific venue, great ales and food and last but not least to all the Tavs who made the effort to attend, get into the spirit and make the day a resounding success. See photo gallery for more pics of the day.
