At the start of June we played a game of cricket. It was at Totteridge, and Stan agreed to write the report. Since then Thommo and I have got married, not to each other, and the Tavs have had 21 fixtures of which we have played 16 of them. Joe has passed 1000 runs in the season, Peter Starkings has almost doubled his career 6s hit, and Swinders has broken his thumb dropping yet another catch. You probably don’t recall this game as Stan has still not written the report. Nor looked like he was going to. So I am.

I’m going to be upfront about why I’m writing this and paying £1 for the pleasure. Well, there are 2 reasons, but one is much more important.

I took a catch. A bloody good one. Caught and bowled, but off a proper whack. Full height above my head, not even looking, plucking it out of the air, all finished with a mic drop. How else?! One that Swinders smashed his thumb to pieces trying to replicate. One that Joe said I was the only Taverner who could possibly have taken that catch. One that caused the entire team to jump on me, and the outgoing batsman to shake my hand. I’ve done it before when saving the President's life against the Bricklayers Arms. Hand shaken by the oppo then too. But I think this one was better. A contender for Champagne Moment. Obvs. But now I’ve had to write this myself so people know about it, clearly it won’t win. £1, I’ll pay on Sunday Ollie.

The other reason is Alo took a 5-fer. A very good one too. Since then Alo has actually become even more unplayable and had to be held back at times, but this was the start of his 2017 bowling masterclass. Bowling from the car park end he took all 5 without assistance. 2 lbw, including their very classy number 4, and the other 3 all clean bowled. An unplayable spell. The reality is we all bowled well in getting them all out for 108. One-fer got 1-21 off his 4. Swinders 2-19 from 4, Stan # for ## off his 4, Alo 5-35 from 7, me 1-0 from 2 overs and Rev 0-9 from his 1.4 overs because Barry effected a run-out cutting off Rev in his prime. Only two of their batsmen got into double figures with both getting 30.

The chase was mostly calm. We dropped Joe down the order given the relatively small target and despite Swampy and ST coming back to the hutch in fairly quick succession, we chased it down for the loss of 5 wickets in under 19 overs. Joe and Alo seeing things home after Stan and I caused a little wobble by getting out close to the line, unnecessarily. Contributions all round with Starkings getting a swift-ish 16, playing himself into the subsequent 6 hitting form, but not achieving such an outcome on this day. Stan got ## off a fairly slow 50 balls, but anchored the innings.

As Stan didn’t want to tell anyone what actually happened in this game I have redacted his contributions. Google it. As he would say. Though he’d probably attach a nasty picture.

After the game beers were had with the oppo, who spoke of how this was their first loss in over 20 months and how they wanted revenge. We since offered them a fixture and were roundly ignored. Maybe next year. Fear does odd things to people, but it all ended in cheers.
