Chris Ely, owner/leaseholder of the Prince of Wales Alehouse and long term sponsor and supporter of the Highgate Taverners, is moving on after almost 17 years at the helm of the PoW. Chris's support for HTCC over the years has been fantastic and the club owe him a great debt of gratitude. As a small token of our appreciation we presented Chris with a specially commissioned caricature at his leaving drinks on Friday 15th September. We all wish Chris well in his future adventures.
Tavs are very proud to be associated with the mental health charity Mind. Their logo appears on our current playing caps and all proceeds from this season's Gladstone Cup will be donated to this most worthy cause. Watch this space for more news on forthcoming fund and awareness raising opportunities.
A couple of very special achievements were celebrated in the recent game against Black Rose. Ollie McGuinness made his 100th appearance for the Tavs - the fastest ever to this milestone.
Joe Quinn then hit his fourth ton of the year, taking him past 1000 runs for the season, a feat only achieved once before in Tavs history by Dom Danos in 2009. Joe went on to pass Dom's previous best of 1088 in the next game against Beamers and currently stands at 1104 with quite a few games remaining...

The UK Tour weekend to Cambridge was extended to accommodate a Friday T20 this year. With a small but perfectly formed squad of just 11, plus El Pres in support, it was always likely to be an attritional 3 days. Amazingly, Tavs nearly pulled off the impossible by beating Ickleton on Friday and Grantchester on Saturday only to run out of steam against Philanderers on Sunday. The Invincibles tag will have to wait another year! It was a great success on and off the field - pic below of the brave 11!
Tavs are extremely grateful to the following companies for generously sponsoring match balls and playing caps for the 2017 season -
4C Associates - playing cap sponsor
Streathers Solicitors - weekend ball sponsor
One Nation Vinyl Distribution - weekend ball sponsor
Danos Associates - weekend ball sponsor
Fugitive Music - T20 ball sponsor
This is in addition to our long standing main/headline sponsorship by the Prince of Wales Alehouse in Highgate High Street. Thanks to Chris at the PoW for his continued support of the club.

The AGM and Awards 2016 extravaganza was held on Thursday 17 November at the Prince of Wales Alehouse in Highgate village. For notes/minutes and full list of award winners, click here: AGM/Awards 2016
18 Taverners gathered at a ridiculously early hour at Gatwick on Friday 30 September to fly out to Lanzarote for this year's overseas tour. It was another great success and Tavs even managed a tour win on the Saturday. The Lanzarote team could not have been more welcoming and accommodating, and special thanks go to Jack Talbot who was the main organiser on the island and helped make the whole trip go so smoothly. Lots of notable performances on - and off - the field, but special mention to Barry Milligan who bagged his 200th Tavs wicket on the Saturday and to Dom Danos who hit yet another century in the same game. Squad pic below.
The traditional end of season battle between the Captain's XI and Vice Captain's XI took place at Totteridge on Saturday 17th September and what an absolute classic it turned out be. Set a target of 287 to win by skipper Jeremy Smith's side, Pete Thompson's VC's XI chased it down with a 6 from the final ball of the game from Dom Danos, who finished on 182 not out and proved once again that he is sheer class. After the game, Alan Browning received his 100 appearances award from our very own El Pres, David Burden (pic below). A great day was rounded off in style at The Wrestlers in Highgate, with around 50 Tavs and partners in attendance until the early hours...
The honours bats have been under assault over the past few weeks! Congrats to the following for some outstanding individual performances:
Sam Smith hit 126 against Highgate CC, his third ton this season. Joe Quinn then smashed 131 against N2 at Totteridge (also his third century this season) in a record Tavs score of 362, before Jeremy Smith (5-16) and Matt Thomas (5-28) both bagged five-fers in the same game. Alan Browning scored his second century of the season against Battersea Bandits, finishing 100 not out, but topping them all was the Tavs all time leading run scorer Dom Danos, who in the same game smashed the individual record score, hitting 196 not out and just missing out on the magical double ton. Well done to all.
The Tavs made the now annual pilgrimage to Cambridge over the weekend of 9th/10th July for the UK mini tour and games against Grantchester and The Philanderers. Full report to follow, but congratulations in the meantime to Alan Browning for getting on the honours board once again with a match-winning century in the game against Grantchester.
Another game and another Tav joins the hallowed ranks of the 100 Club. Congrats to the Tavs very own Dr Feelgood, Mark Blunden, who made his 100th appearance against the London Itinerants at Barnes on Wednesday 6 June. Doc received his award from T20 skipper Matt Thomas after the game (pic below).
The legend that is Adam 'the Reverend' Pervoe joined the Tavs 100 club on Saturday 25 June in a hastily rearranged fixture against Chaseville CC. Congrats to the Rev on his 100th appearance, we look forward to many more! Here is the self-proclaimed 'Earl of Twirl' receiving his award from Pete Thompson.
Two more additions to the honours board were celebrated in the game against Down Under Dragons on Sunday 19 June, John Beckett taking a five-fer and Joe Quinn hitting his second ton of the season in only his second appearance. JB finished with figures of 5 for 30 off 7 overs and Joe on 116 not out. Tavs went on to comfortably win a game played in the best of spirits, with two Tavs - Phil Stubbs and Doc Blunden - kindly guesting for the Dragons to ensure the game was able to go ahead.
Another special achievement to celebrate.Tavs stalwart Richard 'Redser' Horton finally made it to 100 appearances (after 2 years in the nervous nineties) with his appearance in the T20 against Beamers on June 9 at North Mid. Pic below of Red receiving his award from JB.
Joe Quinn returned from injury to make his season debut on Sunday 5 June against Bohemians and despite declaring himself 'rusty', went on to hit a quickfire 128 in a mammoth Tavs total of 301. Unfortunately it wasn't mammoth enough, the Bohos opening pair putting on a brutal stand of 301 for the first wicket and running out comfortable winners!
Another first for the Tavs at Old Elizabethans on Sunday 29 May when 3 members of the same family featured in the same team. Tavs stalwart Mark Sewards was joined by sons Alex and Daniel for the game against OEs. Alex scored an important 30, Daniel's catch took Champagne Moment and dad…well, less said the better ;-) Picture below.
Well done to Sam Smith who followed up his 100 against Archway Ladder (see below) with another ton in our first ever Friday night T20 against Irregulars. Sam scored 111 not out, Nelson not proving unlucky in this case as Tavs went on to win by 25 runs.
A few more early season congratulations to record. Sam Smith became the second Tav to hit a ton this season in the victory over Archway Ladder, scoring 113. This gamealso marked Pete Starkings' 100th appearance for the Tavs and Pete celebrated with a knock of 69 to continue his excellent early season form. Phil Stubbs then got into the act with a five-fer against APCC in a close encounter which Tavs edged in the final over. Stubbsy also scored 34 opening the innings to add to his 5 for 14 off 8 overs to complete a very good all around performance. Well done to all.
Congratulations to Matt Thomas who scored a typically quickfire 100 in a high scoring thriller against old foes Shakespeares on Sunday 8 May at Totteridge. Matt was eventually out for 116 and also took 4 catches and a stumping behind the timbers, along with a runout. A good day at the office for Thommo. Tavs eventually won what was a brilliant game of cricket in the final over.
The 2016 season got off to a damp and chilly start at Totteridge CC on Sunday 24 April, but despite the conditions we had a full 35 over game against our landlords, played in the best of spirits.
The second incarnation of the Tavs annual darts competition - or to give it its full name, Highgate Taverners' Invitational World Championship of Darts - was held at Totteridge Millhillians CC on Saturday 16 January. A dozen players battled it out on the oche for nearly 7 hours with J 'B&B' B eventually edging out defending champion Pete 'The Heart of Dartness' Thompson in a tense final to lift the Steve Beaton Cup. In the fiercely contested Plate competition, Baz 'Smooth Shaft' Milligan beat another defending champion, John 'The Crystal Skull' Thompson to carry off the crockery. Big thanks to Petes Thompson and Starkings for organising the day and to Debbie from Totteridge CC for putting up with us! Pics below of the competitors and the victors celebrating back in Highgate afterwards.
The Wall of Shame in the Prince of Wales is now fully updated - see pic below. As always, huge thanks to Terry Verney for organising the plaques and preparing the bats. Thanks also to Chris Ely for his continued support of the club.
