Our move to The Wrestlers is now very much 'official' with the arrival of the Honours Bats and other selected memorabilia. We have plenty of extra space for the coming seasons and will add new photos and items to allow the display to grow organically. Photos below of the new display.
Indoor nets start on Wednesday 31st January and we are very pleased to be back at Highgate School's Mallinson Sports Centre in Bishopswood Road, Highgate. We have 2 nets booked for 12 weeks, every Wednesday 8.00-9.00pm until 18th April. New players always welcome, just drop us an email beforehand so we can manage numbers.
The annual AGM and Awards evening was held on Thursday 24 November at the home of our new sponsor, The Wrestlers pub. After 15 seasons of support from Chris Ely at the PoW, Chris has now moved on (see below) and the change of management there has prompted a change for Tavs too. We are extremely grateful to Martin Harley at the Wrestlers who has offered to sponsor us and provide space for the honours bats and other memorabilia going forward. We welcomed in this new era in typical Tavs fashion and full details of the award winners plus minutes will be posted in due course. Meanwhile, we are proud to have raised £540.00 for our chosen charity MIND this season and pic below shows our own Simon Thomas accepting a cheque on behalf of the charity from El Pres, David Burden. A great effort from all concerned.
A record touring party of 22 Taverners descended on Tenerife over the weekend of 29 September for the club's tenth overseas tour, our very own 'La Decima'. With so many tourists, we were able to play an intra-club game on the Friday afternoon, followed by a 35 over game on Saturday and a T20 Test on Sunday. Our friendly hosts, Tenerife CC, came out the victors in both games, but the cricket was competitive and played in a wonderful spirit. Another great tour!
The annual end of season game on Saturday 16 September between the Captain's and Vice Captain's XIs was another absolute belter following on from last season's thriller. Held this year on North London CC's lovely main square, the format was changed to a T20 Test to accommodate 13 players on each team! Batting first, skipper Jem's side looked to be in real trouble at 18-4 off 8 overs but a spirited fightback meant that the deficit was only 30 runs going into the second half. A better second innings from the Captain's team meant that Pete Thompson's VC team needed 126 to win but came up short, being bowled out for 113 with 1 ball remaining. The format was a tremendous success, getting everyone involved. Celebrations with many TWAGs also in attendance were held afterwards at the Wrestlers and went on long into the night.
Chris Ely, owner/leaseholder of the Prince of Wales Alehouse and long term sponsor and supporter of the Highgate Taverners, is moving on after almost 17 years at the helm of the PoW. Chris's support for HTCC over the years has been fantastic and the club owe him a great debt of gratitude. As a small token of our appreciation we presented Chris with a specially commissioned caricature at his leaving drinks on Friday 15th September. We all wish Chris well in his future adventures.
Tavs are very proud to be associated with the mental health charity Mind. Their logo appears on our current playing caps and all proceeds from this season's Gladstone Cup will be donated to this most worthy cause. Watch this space for more news on forthcoming fund and awareness raising opportunities.
A couple of very special achievements were celebrated in the recent game against Black Rose. Ollie McGuinness made his 100th appearance for the Tavs - the fastest ever to this milestone.
Joe Quinn then hit his fourth ton of the year, taking him past 1000 runs for the season, a feat only achieved once before in Tavs history by Dom Danos in 2009. Joe went on to pass Dom's previous best of 1088 in the next game against Beamers and currently stands at 1104 with quite a few games remaining...

The UK Tour weekend to Cambridge was extended to accommodate a Friday T20 this year. With a small but perfectly formed squad of just 11, plus El Pres in support, it was always likely to be an attritional 3 days. Amazingly, Tavs nearly pulled off the impossible by beating Ickleton on Friday and Grantchester on Saturday only to run out of steam against Philanderers on Sunday. The Invincibles tag will have to wait another year! It was a great success on and off the field - pic below of the brave 11!
Tavs are extremely grateful to the following companies for generously sponsoring match balls and playing caps for the 2017 season -
4C Associates - playing cap sponsor
Streathers Solicitors - weekend ball sponsor
One Nation Vinyl Distribution - weekend ball sponsor
Danos Associates - weekend ball sponsor
Fugitive Music - T20 ball sponsor
This is in addition to our long standing main/headline sponsorship by the Prince of Wales Alehouse in Highgate High Street. Thanks to Chris at the PoW for his continued support of the club.
